Driven by the goal of “double carbon”, the green and low-carbon development of power cable equipment has become an industry trend. China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) has adopted an innovative model to comprehensively carry out research on polypropylene cable material performance enhancement, cable manufacturing and evaluation methodology in the United Nations petrochemical enterprises, cable factories and universities, etc. After five years of efforts, the research team has achieved a series of innovative results. After five years of efforts, the research team has achieved a series of innovative results. Traditional cross-linked polyethylene insulated power cables have been gradually replaced by polypropylene power insulated cables due to the complex process, high energy consumption and difficult recycling. The research team successfully developed in-situ polymerization of polypropylene insulation materials and semi-conductive shielding materials, forming a continuous and stable production capacity of 200,000 tons/year, and developed medium-voltage polypropylene-insulated power cables manufacturing equipment and processes, breaking through the polypropylene insulation uniform stereotypes of the problem. In addition, the team also put forward the cable material performance evaluation indicators and power cable reliability test methods, and established a standardized system from polypropylene cable material to cable. Compared with traditional power cables, the new power cables reduce manufacturing costs by 17% and production energy consumption by 45%, marking China's environmentally friendly, low-carbon recyclable high-voltage polypropylene cable development technology has reached the world's leading level.
